Joe Fragala NanoInk Inc. Microfabrication Group Campbell, California 95008 Abstract. In Dip Pen NanolithographyTM (DPNTM) ultrasharp tips coated with chemical compounds (or ‘‘ink’’) are in contact with a surface to produce submicron sized features. There is a need to deliver multiple inks to an array of closely spaced tips (or ‘‘pens’’). This work demonstrates the design optimization, fabrication process development, process optimization, and testing of a microfluidic ink delivery apparatus (called ‘‘inkwells’’) for simultaneously coating an array of DPN pens with single or multiple inks. The objective of this work is to deliver between four and ten different inks from reservoirs into an appropriately spaced microwell array. The tips of the multipen array are coated with the same or different inks by dipping them into the microwell array. The reservoirs, microwells, and their connecting microchannels were etched in silicon wafers using deep reactive ion etching. Fluid actuation was achieved by capillary flow (wicking). The optimum layouts for different applications were selected with respect to the volume requirement of different inks, the efficacy of ink-well filling, prevention of bubble formation, and the ease of operation (such as dipping and writing) with a parallel array of pens. © 2005 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Functional extensions of Dip Pen NanolithographyTM: active probes and microfluidic ink delivery

Dip Pen Nanolithography (DPN) is an important technique for nanotechnology and a fundamental new tool for studying the consequences of miniaturization. In this scanning probe technique a sharp tip is coated with a functional molecule (the ‘ink’) then brought into contact with a surface where it deposits ink via a water meniscus. The DPN process is a direct-write pattern transfer technique with ...

Ink Diffusion in Dip - Pen Nanolithography : A Study in the Development of Nano Fountain Probes

The intention of this research was to investigate the ink diffusion that takes place in dip-pen nanolithography in order to better understand how to enhance the possibilities of nano fountain probes. Varying concentrations of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid in ethanol were used as ink in dip-pen nanolithography, and the relationships between contact time, concentration, and ink diffusion were stud...

Polymer pen lithography.

We report a low-cost, high-throughput scanning probe lithography method that uses a soft elastomeric tip array, rather than tips mounted on individual cantilevers, to deliver inks to a surface in a "direct write" manner. Polymer pen lithography merges the feature size control of dip-pen nanolithography with the large-area capability of contact printing. Because ink delivery is time and force de...
